Natalie MacMaster is a wife, mother and virtuoso Cape Breton fiddler. You know her more as the latter than the former; an electrifying performer whose passionate proficiency on the beloved four-string amplifies the traditional East Coast sound for contemporary times.

Natalie has the respect and admiration of the crème de la crème of top-notch musicians: master violinist Mark O’Connor, whose camp MacMaster frequents as a guest instructor; legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma – who recently invited her to prominently participate as a guest performer on his 2008 holiday-themed album Songs Of Joy & Peace; banjo prodigy Béla Fleck; fellow fiddling marvel Alison Krauss; spiritually electrifying superstar guitarist Carlos Santana – the list goes on.

But to Natalie MacMaster, her beloved family now shapes and informs her musicianship as much as the jigs, reels, air, waltzes, strathspeys, marches and traditional folk that feed her spiritual soul.

‘I am a Mom now. I am a wife. Those things are my priorities in life, and I think people get a sense of that – of that part of who I am – through my show. But my music itself hasn’t changed.’

If anything, family has reinvigorated Natalie MacMaster’s commitment to the stage and her audience.

About Kelly...

Kelly Morehouse is an artist with a feel for the peaceful, the calm, and the gentle. The art she creates reflects her attitude toward that which enriches our lives without the clutter of today’s hectic world. People, nature, contemplative abstracts and similar types of introspective subjects are her usual focus.

Born in Newfoundland, raised in Kansas, New Brunswick & Alberta, Kelly returned to the east coast that she loves. She now lives with her husband, daughter and many beloved critters on a hobby farm in the rolling hills of rural Nova Scotia.

Kelly studied art at the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design in Halifax. Her work, for which she has won several awards, has been added to a number of private collections. She is a member of the Portrait Society of Canada and Hants County Arts Council as well as the East Hants Fine Arts Association, and for the past few years has shown her work in their annual Spring Show.

When not at work in her garret or in the barn, Kelly might be found taking photographs or acting on one of the local stages or in a visiting film.

Kelly Morehouse's Portrait of Olympic Athlete Tracy Cameron.

Kelly Morehouse of Mill Village Nova Scotia, sends the FA blog, her recently painted portrait of Olympic bronze medalist, Tracy Cameron.

Media: Chalk, pastels, and gouache.

Kelly writes in her artist's statement:

“An Lasair A-Staigh." That is the title of this portrait, Gaelic, meaning “The Flame Within.” It is this inner flame, this strength, strength of body, strength of mind, focus, spirit and grace that I hope I have illuminated in this portrait of Tracy Cameron.

The paper I chose has fibres that are visible, flowing, unhidden throughout the portrait, as a current, that I feel portrays the flow of Tracy’s energy, of the water which she parts with her oars, the flow of her thoughtful, competitive nature, and of course, the flicker, the flame of the Olympic torch, The Flame Within, that draws together like minded athletes from around the world."
